Chochmas Adam

R’ Avraham Danzig of Vilna, author of the Chayei Adam · Yoreh De’ah

The Chayei Adam’s companion for Yoreh De’ah: 172 sections on shechitah and treifos, meat and milk, salting, niddah, vows, tzedakah, mourning and more — clear, ordered and decisive, and learned for two hundred years wherever these halachos are studied. Here it is in English, set beside its Hebrew, in English that reads on its own.

Why it should be brought to light

The halachos of the Jewish home, set in clear order. From the author of the Chayei Adam, the same clarity, for Yoreh De’ah.

R’ Avraham Danzig of Vilna wrote the Chayei Adam for the laws of daily life, and the Chochmas Adam for Yoreh De’ah. In 172 sections he gathers the dinim of shechitah and treifos, meat and milk, salting, niddah, vows, tzedakah and mourning, and sets each one down in clear order, with a decision the reader can follow.

The edition gives the Hebrew, with its abbreviations written out in full, facing the English paragraph by paragraph. The English is faithful to every word, but it is not a stiff word-for-word rendering: it is written in modern, natural English that reads on its own, so a learner can follow a din from its first line to its ruling.

The author’s own Binas Adam is used to clarify the difficult dinim, so the reader sees what the Chochmas Adam means. The whole work will be fully reviewed and edited by R’ Lazer Danzinger.
